The article deals with features of Taras Shevchenko"s talent and his& considerations about his work, which are artistic and, therefore, not a scientific definition of his poetry gift. In this connection, the author analyzes such poetic works as "Should I write myself…" ("Khiba samomu napysat…"), "I squander on the dev&il"s father" ("Na batka bisovoho ya trachu"), and most of all "Have ill-luck and captivity" ("Chy to nedolia, chy nevolia"). They were written in the time of the soldier"s exile when he felt the most vainness of his artistic creativity. At the same t&ime, Shevchenko started polemics with all humanity, which gave him poetry talent "My purest diamond" (Almaz mii chystyi"), but stole it and ""mired it in a filthy swamp"". The article discusses the ways of studying this motif in his works by various &historians and theorists of literature. It reveals an incomplete understanding of him in contemporary literary studies, and it emphasizes a purely romantic comprehension of the problem when the thoughts of the poet`s lyrical subject are captured by t&he passionate desire of the human ideal and expressed in hyperbolized form. The author, however, is certain that when hyperbolizing, the poet does not miss contact with reality, and the universal sound of that thinking intensified by the use in the w&ork of folk poetics and the Biblical imagery. This is one of the reasons for the worldwide recognition of the poet"s talent, which in comparison with the "eternal" Homer, remains in the literature "timeless" and relevant, despite changes in the devel&opment of human civilization. The author illustrates this by the thoughts of a well-known literary scholar Alexander Biletsky and describes the number of Shevchenko"s major works translations (in all developed countries` languages) and monuments buil&t to him in 35 countries, even on the highest (4200 meters!) mountain peak of the Caucasus.
