The evidence for Greek settlement on the Lower Dniester region in the ancient written sources is very scanty. The evidence in Herodotus is of prime importance. In reality Herodotus was more interested in Scythian matters than those of the Greeks. Herodotus gave special attention to the history of king Scyles and his special relations with Olbia. In light of the coin evidence Scyles could also be connected with Nikonion.
