The problem of the identity of the human person - synchronic and diachronic - is complex because of the duality of the spiritual and bodily human nature. Moreover, when we are dealing with a person the subjective element should be taken into account - a sense of one"s own oneness with oneself. Historically, identity was based either on the theory of substance or on connections in the consciousness of the in&dividual. The concepts of the human personality that identify it with consciousness and self-awareness (inheriting, first of all, J. Locke"s approach) make it difficult to identify human individuals as the selfsame at different stages of their existe&nce. I mean human beings whose consciousness has not yet formed, or has been destroyed. Reductionism in ontology, reducing identity to psychological continuity, turns into an ethical problem. An alternative could be a return to the substantial concep&tion of person. It seems possible to modernize the heritage of Aristotle, Thomas Aquinas and the Neotomists, to recognize the existence of a special being, originally endowed with a spiritual element, self, albeit not conscious until a certain time.
