The article analyzes the folk sources of Ukrainian early Baroque laments and reveals the most important moments of the genesis of the genre. It is proved that poetic laments of the period of the 16th and 17th centuries are related to the genres of funeral works (keenings, wailings) and derived from them dumas (heroic epic folk song genre). The author analyzes common and different ideological foundations for these genres, typical motifs, image-symbols, linguistic features, etc. Identical motifs are realized in the keenings and laments: appeal to wake up, not to be angry, to respond; exaltation and waiting fo&r the deceased to visit; description of the casket as a dark house; impossibility to forget the deceased, etc. The main common motif of both genres is the motif of separa tion from the family (community). The feature distinguishing the laments from k&eenings is that human death is based on the principles of Christian morality - with faith in afterlife and the absolute authority of God. In keenings, mourning for the deceased reflects pagan traditions. It was discovered that the poetic style of fol&k keenings had an effect on other folklore works - wailings and dumas. In laments as well as wailings, not individual, but collective, social expression of sorrow is reflected. The author notes that both in dumas and laments the elevated style (notwi&thstanding the tragedy of the fact) and lyrical narration are used. The relationship of poetic style of dumas and laments is noticeable in the dumas about the heroic struggle of Ukrainians against the Turkish aggressors and the Polish gentry. The cre&ators of dumas mourned the death of the Cossack leaders; they were grieving over the destiny of their captive nation. Both the dumas and the laments often had a recitation character. In this paper the author argues that national folk genres had a pow&erful influence on the formation and development of the literary genre of lament.
