This research is devoted to the ignis fatuus folklore in Japanese, British and Slavic tradition. Previous criticism has had the tendency to view the ignis fatuus phenomena within the frame of a single folklore tradition, while this article aims to explore the phenomena through the comparison of three traditions and in the broader context of the element of fire. We attempt to determine universal and unique aspects of the ignis fatuus phenomena in the three folklore traditions and also distinguish how and to what extent the fire element symbolism is present in the descriptions of the phenomena. The research is interdisciplinary: on one hand, it widely uses materials from the field of folkloristics, and on the other - this material is considered within the broader context of the "religious thinking". Also, we provide a glossary of Japanese ignis fatuus-related phenomena, which is an original translation of Japanese-language materials studied by one of the authors in Japan, and also a glossary of the ignis fatuus-related phenomena from the folklore of the British Isles.
Досліджено феномен блукаючих вогників в японському, слов"янському й британському фольклорі. Цей феномен розглянуто через порівняння трьох традицій, а також у більш широкому контекс&ті уявлень про символ вогню в релігійній свідомості, тоді як у попере- дніх дослідженнях цей феномен розглядався здебільшого в межах однієї фольклорної традиції. Метою було визначити універсальні й унікальні аспекти феномена блукаючих вогників у вище&зазначених трьох фольклорних традиціях, а також визначити, яким чином і якою мірою символіка елементу вогню існує в різноманітних описаннях цього феномена. Додано словник феноменів, пов"язаних з блукаючими вогниками в японському фольклорі (він є ориг&інальним перекладом з японської матеріалів, отриманих одним з авторів під час дослідження в Японії), а також аналогічний словник для фольклору Британських островів.
