У статті розглядаються передумови і причини зростання інтересу американців до дикої природи у другій половині XIX ст. Доводиться, що після закінчення громадянської війни у США значно зріс інтерес не лише до історії, а й до навколишнього середовища. Можливість безперешкодно подорожувати країною відкрила для американців чарівні краєвиди, а краса американських пейзажів сприяла формуванню почуття гордості за свою країну. На цьому тлі початок масштабних вирубок лісів внаслідок розвитку мережі залізниць і фермерства привернув увагу до дикої природи не лише науковців і художників, а й письменників та філософів, серед яких особливе місце посідають Емерсон, Дж. Марш, Г. Торо, Дж. Муїр. У своїх літературних та філософських творах вони обгрунтували як естетичну цінність природи, яка дає натхнення, відновлення та сили, так і негативний вплив людини на довкілля. Це сприяло формуванню у Сполучених Штатах Америки наприкінці XIX ст. природоохоронної ідеології та спонукало до прийняття перших заходів із захисту довкілля на рівні штатів та федерації.
The article examines the background and reasons for the growing interest of Americans to wildlife in the second half of the XIX century. It has proved that after the Civil War in the United States greatly increased i&nterest not only to national history, but also to the environment. The ability to travel free around the country opened to Americans magnificent landscapes and the beauty of the American landscape has contributed to the development the sense of pride& of country. In this situation, the beginning of large-scale cutting of forests in result of development the railway network and farming attracted the attention not only of scientists and artists but also of writers and philosophers. Among them a spe&cial place is occupied by Emerson, J. Marsh, H. Toro, J. Muyir. In their literary and philosophical work is substantiated the aesthetic value of nature, that gives inspiration and strength recovery and negative human impact on the environment. This c&ontributed to the development in the United States in the late XIX century the environmental ideology and led to the adoption of the first measures of environmental protection at the state and federal.
