Стаття присвячена питанню статусу варіантів англійській мови в світі, які розглядаються в зіставленні зі стандартною англійською мовою. Розглядається класифікація варіантів англійської мови Браджа Качру, подається короткий огляд підходів до питання про варіанти англійської мови, зокрема, теорія розвитку варіантів англійської мови (Р. Моуг), фазова теорія (Е. Шнайдер), теорія поширенням та розподілу англійської мови (Г. Відовсон). В статті подано певний перелік основних новітніх способів словотворення вваріантах англійської мови світу.
The article deals with the status of World Englishes in comparison with Standard English. Braj Kachru proposed a classification of Englishes into three concentric circles. R. Moag studied the development of a particular variety – Fijian English – and proposed a life cycle of non-native Englishes. He identified five processes, four of which are undergone by all varieties, and a fifth which may only be experienced by some of them. A more recent and detailed theory for the development of new Englishes comes from Schneider who considers that postcolonial Englishes follow a fundamentally uniform developmental process and identifies five phases in this developmental cycle. H. Widdowson makes an important distinction bet&ween the spread of English and the distribution of English. Lexical innovation in World Englishes is far from being limited to direct borrowing. There are some other ways of innovative word formation: by adding affixes, by combining two words from di&fferent languages, by creating hybrid compounds, by shortening words, by making up an initialism, by making an analogy with another English word, by translating a word or expression from a local language, by continuing to use words that have fallen o&ut of use in standard British or American English, by changing a proper noun to a common noun, by changing the meanings of words.
