This issue begins a series of articles devoted to the analysis of historical stages of research, scientific ideas about the origin, direction and geomorphological study of the structure, the existence of which was provided by A. Karpinski. Since the maps and publications were made at different time periods and different "reading" of the facility were appeared, there is a need to turn to sources where was the first mention of the existence such kind edge strip and by its geographical surveys.
In scientific publications related to the analysis of the geological structure and topography of Europe, the southern part of the East European and Scythian platforms are mentioned various objects whose names associated with the name of Russian geologist A. Karpinski. There are - wall, edge, line, Karpinski lines and lineaments. In the context of the morphostructural an&alysis in Europe appears the question of their correlation: 1) the concept-synonyms which are used to refer to the same object; 2) a variety of the the same object; 3) is fundamentally different objects; 4) it is a different aspect of one object (tec&tonic, geological, geomorphological)?
It was found that edge strip (Polish-Manhyshlatskу deployment) limited by the "Karpinski lines" named by E. Suess. It consists of separate structures, among some of whom are deployment sedimentary cover of diffe&rent time periods, and exits to the surface of the basement rocks and effusive magmatism platform signs. All of them, as edge strip united by general west-northwest direction. Northern and southern boundaries of this band have no clear geographical r&eference that led further research to some differences in their understanding. In issues, A. Karpinski by himself had repeatedly refined and revised length of the edge strip, its structural elements, the northern and southern boundaries.
In addition&, the term "Karpinski line" later was used to refer some other afterarchean dislocations, placed on tectonic maps, what increased the confusion in the interpretation of the term.
