Using an Earth system model, researchers from UPSaclay members highlighted the growth mechanisms and final extent of the ice sheet that covered our planet 450 million years ago. The Earth’s climate fluctuates over time between warm and very cold conditions with catastrophic consequences on living communities. The Late Ordovician period matches one of the “big five” mass extinction events in our planet’s history. It was one of only three major icehouse periods in Earth’s Phanerozoic eon (since the Cambrian period started 541 million years ago - 541 Ma). Researchers from CEA, CNRS and UVSQ, all UPSaclay members, wanted to know more about how and why this glaciation occurred.
