The paper deals with various types of political influence on the translation and translators. The author shows different types of official (public) censorship and unofficial one (self-censorship, punblishing policies). She discusses the problem on the basis of a range of examples (Polish and Russian mainly), and in the context of different historical epochs. She attempts to show the interrelations between the political principles and translators" decisions, and to demonstrate in what way politics influences the choice of profession.
