The membership in the European Union and the relations with Ukraine are two important directions of Polish foreign policy. The membership in the EU is perceived as a confirmation of the success of Poland"s transformation and the crucial factor of its transformation. At the same time it considerably influences Poland on political, economic, legal and cultural levels.Ukraine is the main partner of Poland in the Eastern neigbourhood. Poland hopes to successfully conclude the process of historical reconciliation, bring Ukraine closer to the Western community, and develop stronger economic and social ties between the two countries.
Those two directions of Polish foreign policy are interdependent, although this interdependence is not always positive. Poland aims at developing the cooperation between Ukraine and the EU; at the same time it hopes that an active Polish Eastern policy will strengthen Poland"s position within the European Union. It can rely on several instruments in order to realize this policy such as Polish think-tanks, Polish deputies to the European Parliament or the experience of Polish transformation.
Among the positive aspects of the already mentioned interdependence we should mention the recognition by Ukraine of Poland as its "ad&vocate" in the EU, the establishment of the Eastern Partnership initiative, the engagement of Poland and EU in the resolution of the political crises in Ukraine in 2004 and 2013-2014.
Among the negative aspects are: problems related EU law (introduc&tion of the Schengen visa for the Ukrainian citizens), lack of reforms in Ukraine, the "Ukrainian fatigue" in the EU, lack of understanding for Poland"s pro-Ukrainian policy in the major EU capitals and its negative influence on the Polish-Russian re&lations.
To conclude, it should be said that Poland is currently a border country within the EU. It
wants to change this situation by pulling Ukraine towards the EU. However, this policy is largely ineffective which negatively influences Poland"s r&elations with Ukraine and its position within the Union.
