In the past Scotland was an independent country, but it lost its independence after the English conquest. Despite this, the national movement in Scotland does not stop fighting. In 2007 the Scottish National Party won the elections. The SNP promised tohold a referendum in support of independence or greater autonomy of Scotland within the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
