The Debye theory of heat capacity is modified to describe the thermal propertiesof shape memory alloys undergoing martensitic transformation. The modified theory involves two characteristic temperatures instead of Debye temperature. The characteristic temperatures are related to the velocities of longitudinal and transversal sound waves, which are substantially different due to the pronounced softening of shear elastic modules during the martensitic transformation of alloy. A substantial difference in the temperature dependencies of heat capacity computed from the orthodox Debye formula and modified theory is demonstrated. The heat capacity of Ni-Mn-Ga shape memory alloy is studied in the framework of modified theory and good agreement between theoretical and experimental results is observed. The minimal value of temperature dependent effective modulus is estimated from the characteristic temperature value related to the average velocity of transversal sound.
