This article deals with features of terrestrial laser scanning and it"s influence on the urban planning. In comparison with tachometry, GPS surveying and classical remote sensing terrestrial laser scanning provides opportunities for faster and more effective data acquisition. The author provides description for terrestrial laser scanning and it`s general properties. Further was provided the classification for terrestrial laser scanning. It was divided by two categories - stationary scanning and mobile scanning. Each category was briefly described. There were presented comparison of stationary and mobile scanners with presentation of theirgeneral pros and cons. There were stated that data acquisition quality of stationary scanners is ten times higher than in mobile scanners. But mobile scanners gain in speed of data acquisition. They can process great amounts of data within a few hour&s. At the end after comparing scanners, examples of their application in urban planning provided. They are: structure deformation monitoring, street appearance monitoring, quality control of road works, records of use of advertisement space, monitori&ng green spaces along major urban roads etc.
