The paper considers the effects of the foreign capital inflow and its "sudden stops" on the economy of the recipient country and examines the impact of such forms of foreign capital as foreign direct investment, loans, banking and bonds and other long-term debt securities on economic growth volatility in Ukraine. It is proved that the decline in GDP during the crisis &period was mainly due to the inflow of foreign capital to the banking sector, which caused a boom of foreign currency lending in Ukraine in the pre-crisis period. It is shown that the inflow of foreign direct investment has not significant impact on &the economic downturn in Ukraine. Also it is proved that according to the calculations the growth rate of GDP in the European Union countries which were the main source of capital inflow into the banking sector significantly influenced the economic g&rowth volatility in Ukraine during the crisis period.
